Goat Wranglers

I got to spend the last four days in the Far West. We spent time in several different villages. The group bought 80 goats, 2 turkeys, 2 pigs, and 40 chickens. We had to take them by foot to the mission. The Haitians told us to take the chickens but the other intern and me didn't want to touch them. We decided to take the goats, so they gave us each three. It was like walking really dumb dogs. We jokingly called oursevles the Goat Wranglers. We gave some to the church in Beauchamp and some in LaPlaine. The pastors called the neediest families and gave them to those families. Those families then must bring their first born goat back to the church so the cycle continues to bless others.

One day we got to participate in a Haitian wedding. They had this marching band that went through town to find the bride and then brought her to the church. It was such an elaborate occasion and everyone was so dressed up. The pastor was cracking himself up the entire ceremony. Haitians went crazy when the couple kissed, although they have several kids already. The pastor had this crazy infection in his foot, so we popped the bubble and squeezed all of the infection. I only lasted like 2 minutes before I had to leave the room. He was so trusting even though none of us had any medical experience, definitely had some faith.

We had several rice giveaways and got to spend time getting to know various families in different communities. We met people we knew or had connections to which was awesome. I got to see some of the girls from my very first trip and got to talk to them more. The group traveled to the orphanage too. The kids are so joyful and they just make my heart melt. The more time I spend with them, the more I realize how incredible those kids are. We played silly games and had a blast for hours. We gave them water pouches and they were so excited just to get some water and snacks.

Last night, Hannah and I laid on the roof at Beauchamp star gazing. It's so amazing how beautiful the stars and the moon are. The moon had this really crazy halo effect and we stayed there for hours in awe of how great our God really is.

  1. Hi, Caitlin,

It has been so great to hear about all the ministry opportunities you've had since returning to Haiti. It also sounds fun--glad to hear that, too. Your comment about laying on the roof looking at the stars and moon brought back wonderful memories of doing the same in Grand Goave. I bet the full moon last night was awesome! God is so good and his work in you is as well. Keep it up--prayed for you this morning. Blessings, Carole
